From the Streets to Salvation: Harry Meeks’ Journey of Redemption
Hi, my name is Harry Meeks. I’m 40 years old, from Aurora, Illinois. Growing up as the only boy among five older sisters, I was spoiled. Being the only boy made me feel special, but it also meant I had to be tough to protect my sisters. Over time, I began to feel isolated and sought connection on the streets. I wanted the camaraderie of having “brothers” and found myself drawn into gangs and violence. This lifestyle quickly consumed me, and I strove to excel in it, embracing drugs and alcohol as part of the life I had chosen.
When I was 18, my grandmother passed away, and my life spiraled further out of control. I began using drugs excessively, leading to frequent arrests and eventually a five-year prison sentence. I entered prison with staples in my ribs from being shot four times—a stark reminder of the violent path I was on. Those years were some of the hardest of my life, but I survived.
Despite this, I didn’t change my ways. When I got out of prison, I plunged even deeper into the lifestyle that had nearly destroyed me. I was completely broken and lost. It was at this low point that I sought help from Adult & Teen Challenge.
Through Adult & Teen Challenge, I’ve learned to focus on God and rely on Him to transform my life. I’ve discovered the value of a dollar and the true meaning of loving God. I plan to stay with Adult & Teen Challenge after graduation and work there to give back all that I have received. I am committed to continuing my journey with God and helping others find their way, just as I have.
My life verse is Isaiah 40:31: “But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.”
God Bless!
